Melnyk calls on local elected officials to support the Virginia Beach School Board’s commitment to equity and inclusion
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA —Kim Melnyk, Vice Chair of the Virginia Beach School Board and Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates District 84, released the following statement regarding the rally held before Tuesday night’s school board meeting:
“I am deeply disheartened and disgusted by what we saw outside of the Virginia Beach School Board meeting Tuesday night. A rally was held to protest the equity policy put in place during the fall, fueled by false narratives fabricated by elected officials who have deeply misrepresented the policy. The actions of the political leaders who stoked these sentiments and participated in the rally are deeply misguided, and show a desperate need for change in our leadership.
I am so proud to have played a part as Vice Chair in enacting our equity policy, and I condemn anyone using it to pander to extremist groups and further their political careers. Let’s be clear: this policy is about ensuring that every single student feels welcome and included in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. This policy should not be politicized in an effort to divide us; instead, this is a way for us to unite our community in support of all of our children.
These protests do not reflect our values in Virginia Beach. Our diversity is our strength, and I am proud to stand with our leaders and community members in prioritizing equity for our students.
I remain deeply committed to promoting inclusion and equity in our public schools, and I am calling on the leaders spreading false narratives about what this policy is about to stop their attacks and do what is right for their constituents and our community.”
